Manali is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Whether you dream of snowfall, paragliding over green meadows or peaceful walks through apple orchards, choosing the right month makes all the difference. Here’s how the year looks from our balcony in Burwa, just down the road from Solang Valley.
Quick answer
- For snow: December to February (and sometimes early March).
- For adventure sports & pleasant weather: March to June.
- For lush greenery and lower prices: July to September (with monsoon precautions).
- For clear skies and calm travel: October and November.
Spring & summer (March – June)
This is Manali’s busiest and most comfortable season. Days are pleasantly warm, nights are cool and the valley bursts into colour with blossoms and fresh green slopes. It is the ideal time for families escaping the heat of the plains.
- Best for: paragliding, zorbing, ATV rides, gondola rides in Solang Valley, sightseeing in Manali town.
- Snow: still visible on the high peaks; the Rohtang Pass usually opens for tourists around May or June, depending on clearance.
- Tip: May and June are peak holiday months – book rooms early and start sightseeing in the morning to beat traffic.
Monsoon (July – September)
The monsoon paints the Kullu valley in deep green and brings misty, romantic mornings. It is quieter and often better value, but heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures in the region.
- Best for: relaxed stays, reading on the balcony, short local walks, cafés and temples.
- Tip: keep a flexible itinerary, check road and weather advisories before long drives and avoid travelling late in the evening.
Autumn (October – November)
Many seasoned travellers consider autumn the most beautiful time in Manali. The skies are crisp and clear, the mountain views are at their sharpest and the crowds thin out after the festive rush. Evenings turn cold, so pack warm layers.
- Best for: photography, drives through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, couples and slow travel.
- Tip: the first snowfall on the higher passes can arrive in November – check conditions if you plan to go beyond the tunnel.
Winter (December – February)
Winter transforms Solang Valley into a snowy playground. Fresh snowfall, frozen streams and white pine forests make this the most magical season for honeymooners and families who want to see snow.
- Best for: skiing, snow scooters, tubing, snow walks and cosy evenings indoors.
- Tip: heavy snow can close roads beyond Solang; carry thermal wear, waterproof shoes and sunglasses, and allow extra time for travel.
