Two of the most popular day trips from Manali lead high into the Himalayas: the legendary Rohtang Pass and the valley of Sissu in Lahaul, reached through the Atal Tunnel. Burwa sits on the way to both, which makes Dashaur Heights a convenient base for an early start.
Rohtang Pass at a glance
Rohtang Pass rises to roughly 3,980 metres and marks the gateway between the Kullu valley and Lahaul–Spiti. Expect snowfields for much of the year, glacier views and a dramatic mountain landscape.
- Season: the pass generally opens to tourists around May–June once snow is cleared and stays open until snowfall closes it, usually around November.
- Permits: vehicles going to Rohtang need a permit issued online by the Himachal Pradesh authorities, and the number of permits per day is limited. Book in advance, especially in peak season.
- Closures: the pass has historically been closed to tourist traffic on one weekday for maintenance, and can close at short notice due to weather. Always check the latest status before you go.
Atal Tunnel & Sissu
Opened in 2020, the Atal Tunnel is a roughly 9 km road tunnel under the Pir Panjal range that connects Manali with the Lahaul valley in minutes. On the other side lies Sissu, a quiet village with a striking waterfall, the Chandra river and wide, stark mountain views.
- Why go: it’s a spectacular drive, usually shorter and simpler to plan than Rohtang.
- Winter: the Lahaul side receives heavy snow, and traffic may be restricted during or after snowfall – follow police and district advisories.

What to carry
- Warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and a cap – it’s much colder at altitude
- Sunglasses and sunscreen to protect against snow glare
- Water, light snacks and any personal medication
- Cash, as card and mobile network coverage can be patchy
Altitude & safety tips
- Start early – mornings have clearer weather and less traffic.
- Don’t overexert yourself at high altitude; drink water and rest if you feel dizzy or breathless.
- Hire local drivers who know mountain roads and current conditions.
- Children, elderly travellers and anyone with health conditions should consult a doctor before going to high passes.
